Research labs

At the Department of Archive & Library Sciences, we have three official teaching and research laboratories (established by PD 89/10-04-2003, GGI A82/10-04-2003), aiming at promoting research and supporting the educational process, with emphasis on Cultural & Historical Heritage Documentation, Information Technology and Digital Libraries & Electronic Publications. Throughout their years of existence, they have produced interesting research results which have been published in scientific journals:

The Laboratory of Cultural and Historical Heritage Documentation

The aim of this Laboratory is to support the Department’s research and teaching requirements and programmes in all issues related to the collection, organisation and management of cultural and historical documents. It aspires to provide students and researchers with the necessary knowledge and skills related to its interests. The Laboratory schedules its annual activities and closely follows the activities of respective organisations while maintaining a close collaboration with similar bodies in Greece and abroad. It promotes the production of cultural material and events, and plans material collection missions. It is also involved in the digitisation of material deemed necessary to be stored in digital form. It follows recent developments in documentation methodology and technology; is kept abreast of the legal aspects of cultural heritage management; carries our research programmes; and collaborates with agencies producing or managing pertinent cultural goods. The staff organises, manages, conserves, reproduces, safeguards, documents and promotes all cultural documents gathered by the Laboratory. Said material is made available to interested bodies of the public and private sector in order to allow them to support their research and scientific activities.

The Laboratory of Information Technologies

The Laboratory of Information Technologies aims at supporting the Department’s research and education programmes on issues related with and support the development, evolution, management and promotion of various types of technologies that aid the production, dissemination, management and successful use of information. It organises and implements research programmes related to its curriculum; participates in other pertinent programmes; undertakes to carry out third-party projects; and offers consultancy services on its subjects to all interested parties.

The Laboratory of Digital Libraries and Electronic Publications

The Laboratory of Digital Libraries and Electronic Publications provides high-level education and promotes research by complementing the Department’s teaching and research activities. It participates in European and national research projects concerning digital information and its distribution systems, which it carries out using both its staff and external collaborators –usually Department alumni. It is also in close co-operation with numerous scientific and cultural agencies and its priority is the efficiency of said agencies’ information digitisation, digital organisation and distribution, based on international practice, so as to improve the National digital content of Greece. Through these activities, our students are provided with the opportunity to acquire unique experiences, useful for their training and their future career as professionals. The Laboratory deals with current issues concerning information organisation, distribution and related technologies. More specifically, it includes digital information management, interoperability and evaluation of systems supporting the management and distribution of information and knowledge, as well as the individualised access to sources of information, services and Web 2.0.
Aiming at playing an active role in both the national and international scientific community, the Laboratory attempts to organise information in an efficient way and to distribute it using state-of-the-art means:

  1. It studies and tests models, protocols, technologies and their applications, aiming at developing integrated and interconnected information gateways
  2. It participates in the international research and standardisation endeavours in its field, representing our country and expressing the particularities of our language
  3. It offers requirement description, planning and development services for integrated solutions, based on international standards and the principle of interoperability.
